Gospel: Mark 6: 7-13 Year B Jesus called the twelve and sent them out…. It’s the first mission of Your Apostles. A Good Educator, You make them experience a little bit of what their life will be like. You send them two by two: they will have to help each other, mutual support…. They will most importantly of all have to proclaim Your message of love by example of their lives: They will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another…(Jn. 13:35). You give them power over evil spirits… The mission You entrust to them is not easy. It is Your mission. It involves liberating people from the clutches of the devil, and restoring them to life as children of God…. You pointed this out from the start of Your ministry: I came to liberate captives, to free the downtrodden (Lk. 4:18). It is necessary to rescue those imprisoned by sin, captives of the devil. The task is difficult, because this devil is not going to relinquish his prey without resistance, nor to allow himself to be dispossessed from domination of the world that he has overwhelmed. He instructed them to take nothing for the road…. What a strange recommendation for an almost impossible mission! Your disciples haven’t the slightest formation for such a mission … and You deprive them of all resources! Truly, Lord, Your ‘logic’ is not that humans! You thus remind us that the salvation of the world does not come from us, but from You. It is not ‘our’ message, ‘our’ ideas that we must proclaim, but Your message … and Your love. We must not rely on ‘us’, but must be docile instruments in Your hands. The Apostles understood … and the result followed: They set out to preach repentance, casting out demons and healing the sick…. Through the Eucharist, You remain with us, Lord, and You are our strength to accomplish what You ask of us. May You be blessed for this Bread of Life so generously offered! Keep us aware of our poverty, and of Your ever-faithful...

Gospel: Luke 24: 35-48 26 April 2009 The disciples told about what had happened on the road. They have just experienced an extraordinary event. They want to share this joy with their companions. They tell how they recognised him at the breaking of Bread. This challenges me. and where am I in this? I meet You, lord, at every Mass. There, You enlighten me through your Word, You share Your Bread with me. Does my life after that tell to others about this meeting with You? Come, reinflame my heart, Lord, and increase my faith! Jesus was there in their midst…. They were overjoyed on knowing that You were risen. Suddenly here they are stricken with shock and fear when You show Yourself to them. It is difficult for them to grasp the marvelous reality. With love and patience, You reassure them, You enlighten them: It is not a ghost, it is really You Who are there before them. You make them see, touch, Your hands, Your feet wounded by nails; You eat with them like heretofore. Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. You explain to them what is written about You in the Law, the Prophets, the Psalms. You continue to do it for us at Mass. You want to make us understand the deep meaning of all the Word of God. open our heart and our Spirit, Lord, so that throughout the Scriptures, including that much ignored “Old Testament”, we may be able to know You better. Give us a taste for Your Word, just like Jeremiah: When Your words came I devoured them: Your Word is my delight and the joy of my heart (Jer....

Third Sunday of Lent

Gospel: John 2: 13-25 15 March 2009 Cycle B Jesus went up to Jerusalem…. To go up to Jerusalem … that was the duty of every Jew on great festivals. It was the dream of exiles or of Jews dispersed around the world… To-day it is the desire of every fervent believer, Jew, Christian or Muslim…. But to go up to Jerusalem is above all else a spiritual journey. Jerusalem is thee city chosen by God to reside there. “The name of the city will be: The lord is there! (Ez. 48:35). The ascent to Jerusalem is therefore the representation and the goal of our life. We are on our way to Jerusalem, following You, Jesus, journeying towards God. Your entire existence has been an ascent to Jerusalem. Forty days after Your birth, Mary and Joseph take You to Jerusalem to present You to the Lord…(Lk. 2:22). At twelve years of age, You go up there for the Feast of Passover and You stay behind in the temple, in Your Father’s House (Lk. 2:43-49). It is from there that You will return to him: Now we are going up to Jerusalem; the Son of man will be put to death …., and on the third day he will rise again. (Mk. 10:33-34). From the earthly Jerusalem, You enter the new Jerusalem; the abode of God with mankind. He found merchants installed in the Temple …. The Temple of Jerusalem has become a market place! God is relegated to a corner! You cannot tolerate this, lord. But isn’t this all too often how it is with our hearts? The true abode of God is our heart: We are the temple of the living God (2Cor. 6:16). In chasing the sellers out of the Temple, You tell us of Your desire to free us from all that may be an obstacle to Your love. Come unburden us, Lord! Come open our hearts ever more to God, to His light, His love. Draw us after You, Jesus, in our ascent to...
