Gospel : Mark 9 : 38 – 48 Year B John, one of the twelve, said to Jesus …. John is the one who will best understand Your message of love, but for the moment, he is still a prisoner of his human impulses. His spirit remains narrow, intolerant …. even if it is motivated by love of You …It is a love poorly understood! We have seen someone casting out evil spirits in Your name … This is something good … which invites us to joy, to thanksgiving. But that is not John’s idea: we wanted to stop him. And the motive for this is clear; he is not one of our followers! He is not in our ‘Group’ ….. I can’t throw stones at him. Do I not sometimes have the same mentality? Is there not deep within me a sort of superiority complex (consciously or not)? I believe that my ideas are the best, I think that I alone, or more so than others, have the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit! …. So I am deaf to what others can say and blind to what they do. Jesus answered : do not stop him! And You explain : Whoever is not against us is for us. You reject every spirit of the ivory tower, of the ghetto. The Spirit of God is not the privileged property of one Church, of one group. He blows wherever He wills (Jn. 3:8), He spreads Himself out through the entire universe. Let us share the vastness of Your view, Lord. Enlarge our hearts to the dimensions of Yours. Teach us to see all that is beautiful and good, throughout the world …. to make us wonder at even the least of the positive things that others have and praise the Father of Heaven for them …. Through the celebration of the Eucharist, give us Your Spirit, Lord. May He make us into a permanent praise to the glory of the...

Gospel : Mark 9 : 30 – 37 Year B Jesus was instructing His disciples …. You take time to instruct Your disciples, Lord. Their response to your call has not transformed them instantaneously. Their education will be long-term … It is only with the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost that they will eventually understand that You are not the human Messiah they were expecting. You continue to instruct us, also, by Your Word, especially at each celebration of the Eucharist. The patience that You had with the Apostles, You also have with us, because ….how we resemble them! They did not understand what He said and were afraid to ask …. They remained stuck with their personal ideas of a human Messiah …. of earthly happiness ….. The subject You were tackling did not interest them. Instead of listening to You speak of suffering and death, they prefer to discuss amongst themselves as to who was the greatest! What are our conversations worth? Is it to do with listening to You, Lord? A shared quest for the plan of God? Or is it chattering where everyone remains centred on himself? Even at Mass, how do I behave? Do I not remain too immersed in my worries, my preoccupations …. instead of listening to You?… instead of joining myself to Your prayer and to the offering of Your Body given and Blood poured out for the people? Open my heart, Lord! May I let myself be instructed by You! Help me to put into practice what You said to Your disciples: If anyone wants to be first, he must make himself the servant of all! Let me become again like the child You gave us as a model, a child who allows himself to be guided in all confidence and simplicity...

Twenty Fourth Sunday -13 September 2009

Gospel : Mark 8 : 27 – 35 Year B Who do people say that I am? ….. For 2000 years, this question is asked. Answers have come, numerous, varied ….. But these answers, even the best of them, are still fall short of the truth. You surpass us to such an extent, Lord! The heavens are as high above the earth as My thoughts are above your thoughts (Is.55:9). Nevertheless, You want us to progress in knowledge of Your Mystery, and You continue to call us personally: But you, Who do you say that I am? Peter’s answer is good…. many have subscribed to it. But what was underlining these words? Peter dreams of a Messiah in line with the ideas of his times, a Messiah Who will come to restore the kingdom of Israel, a Messiah Who will answer our human, earthly aspirations, a Messiah Who will rid us of suffering….. This is not Your point of view, Lord. You try to explain to us : The Son of man must suffer …. be rejected … killed…. rise again …. Now they can’t follow You any more! Peter tells You frankly ….. And how many baptised people think the same way, and prefer not to hear! Me too, sometimes, I am tempted to say that You exaggerate! Let me welcome Your answer, even if I find it difficult to understand. Get behind me! Your thoughts are not those of God, but of humans. Yes, Lord Jesus, You know better than I do what Your mission is about. You came to lead us into the Kingdom of God. I have no advice for You. Keep me behind You, walking after You, with love, in a humble and confident faith …. If the ascent is rough at present, I know that You are there! Thank You,...
