Third Sunday of Easter

Gospel: Luke 24: 35-48 26 April 2009 The disciples told about what had happened on the road. They have just experienced an extraordinary event. They want to share this joy with their companions. They tell how they recognised him at the breaking of Bread. This challenges me. and where am I in this? I meet You, lord, at every Mass. There, You enlighten me through your Word, You share Your Bread with me. Does my life after that tell to others about this meeting with You? Come, reinflame my heart, Lord, and increase my faith! Jesus was there in their midst…. They were overjoyed on knowing that You were risen. Suddenly here they are stricken with shock and fear when You show Yourself to them. It is difficult for them to grasp the marvelous reality. With love and patience, You reassure them, You enlighten them: It is not a ghost, it is really You Who are there before them. You make them see, touch, Your hands, Your feet wounded by nails; You eat with them like heretofore. Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. You explain to them what is written about You in the Law, the Prophets, the Psalms. You continue to do it for us at Mass. You want to make us understand the deep meaning of all the Word of God. open our heart and our Spirit, Lord, so that throughout the Scriptures, including that much ignored “Old Testament”, we may be able to know You better. Give us a taste for Your Word, just like Jeremiah: When Your words came I devoured them: Your Word is my delight and the joy of my heart (Jer....

Second Sunday of Easter

Gospel: John 20: 19-31 19 April 2009 After the death of Jesus, the evening of the first day of the week…. This is not a simple historically precise timing. St. John puts us in parallel with the account of creation in Genesis. Your death, Lord, marks the end of a world, the end of the reign of Satan; You had predicted it: the prince of this world will be cast out (Jn. 12:31). Your resurrection is the first day of the new creation. Your death had plunged Your disciples into darkness and fear; for them it was the pits of emptiness and darkness (Gen. 1:2), like at the beginning of the world. your resurrection will be for them the radiant light announced by Isaiah (Is.60:1). Jesus came, He was there in the midst of them…. The “Light of the nations” acknowledged by Simeon 40 days after Your birth, shrines from now on and fills with joy the heart of Your disciples. The new world which begins does not need sun any more, nor moon to give light, because its torch is the Lamb (Apoc. 21:22). It is You, risen Jesus! This light should shrine for the whole world. You entrust this mission to Your disciples: As the Father sent Me I also send you. He breathed on them. By this gesture, You pursue Your task of the new creation. At the beginning, God breathed into the nostril of the man, whom He had formed, the breath of life and the man became a living being (Gen.2:7). On this first day, You sent the Holy Spirit on man and he became a child of God. You share Your divine life with Your disciples. Through the Eucharist You continue this new creation: You are there in the midst of us, risen Jesus, like that Easter evening. May you be blessed! Let us live with You, as beloved children of the heavenly...

Easter Sunday Message

Posted by on Apr 12, 2009 in Sunday Reflections | 0 comments

Resurrexi, et adhuc tecum sum. Alleluia! – I have risen, I am still with you. Alleluia! Dear Brothers and sisters, Jesus, crucified and risen, repeats this joyful proclamation to us today: the Easter proclamation. Let us welcome it with deep wonder and gratitude! Resurrexi et adhuc tecum sum – I have risen, I am still with you, for ever. These words, taken from an ancient version of Psalm 138 (v 18b), were sung at the beginning of today’s Mass. In them, at the rising of the Easter Sun, the Church recognizes the voce of Jesus himself who, on rising from death, turns to the Father filled with gladness and love, and exclaims: My Father, here I am! I have risen, I am still with you, and so I shall be for ever; your Spirit never abandoned me… These words invite us to contemplate the risen Christ, letting his voice resound in our heart. With his redeeming sacrifice, Jesus of Nazareth has made us adopted children of God, so that we too can now take our place in the mysterious dialogue between him and the Father… Through the death and resurrection of Christ, we too rise to new life today, and uniting our voice with his, we proclaim that we wish to remain for ever with god, our infinite good and merciful Father. Dear Christian brothers and sisters in every part of the world, dear men and women whose spirit is sincerely open to the truth, let no heart be closed to the omnipotence of this redeeming love! Jesus Christ died and rose for all; he is our hope – true hope for every human being. Today, just as he did with his disciples in Galilee before returning to the Father, the risen Jesus now sends us everywhere as witnesses of his hope, and he reassures us: I am with you always, all days, until the end of the world (cf Mt 28:20). Fixing the gaze of our spirit on the glorious wounds of his transfigured body, we can understand the meaning and value of suffering, we can tend the many wounds that continue to disfigure humanity in our own day. Let us allow the light that streams forth from this solemn day to enlighten us; let us open ourselves in sincere trust to the risen Christ, so that his victory over evil and death may also triumph in each one of us, in our families, in our cities and in our nations. Let us shrine forth in every part of the world… Happy Easter! – Pope Benedict XVI, Urbi et Orbi Message, Easter...
